Plus: reflections on times past and vintage Newsround Tameside, looking back at the lighter side of the local news in years gone by, compiled from the Tameside Reporter archives.
Mike has lived in Tameside since the dawn of time. Seriously though, he was born at Ashton Hospital in the year that the M1 was opened and transistor radios went on sale for the first time... and in the very same week that Elvis Presley topped the charts with a double A side - the fast-and-furious I Got Stung and the slow love ballad One Night.
Brought up in Denton, Mike attended Denton Central Infants & Juniors, before going on to Audenshaw Grammar School. There, in the year below Mike, was a lad from Haughton Green by the name of Mick Hucknall, who really stood out from the crowd... and continues to do so as lead singer of the multi-million selling Simply Red.
But enough of this blatant name dropping!
Mike's first job was at the Denton Reporter, starting out as a very young 'cub' reporter in a tiny office above a butcher's shop, looking out on to Denton market place, as it was then, just across the way from the old post office. For Mike, it was the start of a career in local newspapers which has continued to the present day.
In the early '80s, he was one of a team of volunteers which launched Heartbeat Radio, later re-named 8 Towns Radio, at Tameside Hospital. His first broadcast was on the station's opening day in October 1983, when he read the news on the Saturday afternoon show presented by Pete Meadows.
Fast forward to 2007 - Mike and Pete were two of the original presenters when Tameside Radio was launched.
Vintage Newsround Tameside, a regular feature on Sunday afternoon, is based on the local news round-up which Mike compiled and presented for 10 years on the sadly now defunct hospital radio station.
The pioneering station made the news itself in October 1992 when it was heard across the borough of Tameside for the first time. This was a special event broadcast to help raise funds for 8 Towns hospital radio, but it was also the first community radio broadcast by local people, for local people, here in Tameside. As such, it proved to be a trail-blazer for the real local radio that we enjoy today - 103.6FM Tameside Radio.
