Mike Wallbank

Born at Ashton General the same year that the M1 was opened and transistor radios went on sale for the first time.
Brought up in Denton, attended Audenshaw Grammar School. In the year below Mike, there was a lad called Mick Hucknall - wonder what happened to him?! Joined the Reporter Group (now the Tameside Reporter) straight from school as a junior reporter. Later became a freelance journalist.

In 1982-3, Mike was one of the original team of volunteers who formed Heartbeat Radio, later re-named 8 Towns Radio, at Tameside General Hospital.  The station made history in October 1992 when it was heard across the borough of Tameside for the first time.

This was a special event broadcast to help raise funds for the hospital radio station, but it was also the first community radio broadcast by local people, for local people, here in Tameside.
As such, it proved to be a trail-blazer, pioneering the real local radio of today - 103.6FM Tameside Radio.

Presenting The Show That Time Forgot from 1 till 3 on Sunday afternoons has fulfilled a long-standing ambition.

Each week, Mike serves up an unpredictable playlist of lesser played hits, classics and curiosities, oddities and novelties, plus a sprinkling of more familiar oldies from the past 50 years.

Regular features include: Vintage Newsround Tameside - looking back at the lighter side of the local news in Tameside - from a certain month in a certain year - using archived scripts from the original Newsround Tameside, a weekly feature which Mike compiled and presented for 10 years on the sadly now defunct local hospital radio station.

Later, the Tameside Radio time machine takes us back to another month & year - occasionally we will span a couple of months or a season spring, summer, autumn or winter.
Music and memories of people, places and events making the news, the TV shows we were watching and more besides...
Cheery Tunes - with vocals in the first hour, then Absolutely Lyricless in part two: quirky but instantly hummable instrumental tracks and TV and radio theme tunes from years gone by.

In and between, we span the decades, opting for the less obvious hits and forgotten gems wherever possible.
Intrigued by any of the songs or instrumental tunes on the show? If you didn’t quite catch the title, or the name of the artist or group - help is at hand!

A complete playlist of all the music on this weeks show will be available online, usually within 24 hours, follow the blog link from this page. If there’s a rare track you would like to hear again, please e-mail Mike.

WHATS ON / COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD

Mike also compiles and presents the daily What’s On and Community Noticeboard features which can be heard throughout the week on Tameside Radio.
Not only that, he also keeps the Events section of the website up to date with all the latest news of events and activities taking place throughout Tameside.
