After playing with various orchestras and bands throughout the country, he went on to teach music, both as Head of Music in a number of comprehensive schools, and as a peripatetic teacher of brass instruments.
He wrote his first brass band composition at the age of 15, and continues to write, for various ensembles to this day. For many years he was the organist and choirmaster at a number of local churches.

For a time after leaving teaching, he set up a business making hand-carved Victorian Rocking Horses and hand-carved leather goods.
