Tameside's blooms judged
Posted on Mon 26 Jul 2010
Judges for the regional North West in Bloom award are today touring Tameside to see if the borough can retain the title of best City or Metropolitan Borough.
The Tameside in Bloom team have been busy making sure everything is blooming marvellous in time for the competitions this year. The North West in Bloom judges are touring the borough today (Monday 26th July) and the Britain in Bloom judges visit on Tuesday 10th August.
The borough aims to retain its title as Best City/Metropolitan Borough in the North West for the sixth time and is going all out to win Britain in Bloom after coming second on two previous attempts. This year Tameside is competing against Solihull, Aberdeen, Northampton and the London Borough of Islington. There will be 1,500 hanging baskets around Tameside and 600 tubs and troughs. In total, there will be more than 300,000 plants on the streets this summer.
A number of projects have been carried out across the borough including extensive wildflower landscaping at Waterloo Park in Ashton. This will provide a colourful display for residents and a habitat for wildlife in what is a heavily built-up area.
Cllr Jackie Lane, Assistant Executive Member for Heritage and Tourism, said: Over the years, more and more communities have got involved with In Bloom. Not only does it create a pleasant environment to live and work, but it promotes good community spirit with neighbours actually getting to know each other.
This year 25 communities from across Tameside are entering the North West in Bloom It's your Neighbourhood awards, more than doubling the number of entries in 2009.
