POLICE CLEAN UP NEIGHBOURHOOD
Posted on Tue 20 Jul 2010
A community day of action took place in and around the area of Hazel Street in Audenshaw yesterday. Representatives from the Police, the Council, Regenda Group and the Community Payback Scheme carried out the environmental clean up which focused on litter picking, strimming overgrown grass and prevention of fly tipping.
Tameside Radio visited the clean up and spoke to Linda Winpenny, Quality Audit Worker for Tameside Council who said the following about the clean up;
"We're here today to try and do a day of action to ask the residents mainly to take back their bins down the alleyways so that the bins don't blow all over the place and leave the litter and all the rubbish that's left here."
Statistics gathered by Tameside Council's Fly Tipping Unit show that since 2005 the council have served eight legal environmental health notices on residents in the area.
We spoke to Enforcement Officer, Michael Shockelidge, who told us more about his role;
"Where there is any fly tipping or accumulations that may appear in back passage ways or anything like that, I go in and I inspect it. If there is any evidence that materialises in the accumulations then there is certain powers that the authority has to try and stop that thing happening."
As a fly tipping prevention method some alleys in the area have been gated, Linda Winpenny had more to say about this;
"They have already alley gated on Hawthorn Street, a very successful alley gating we're hoping to actually get more alley gating but you have to get all the residents permission and unfortunately sometimes this makes it awkward and difficult to get the section we want alley gating done."
Anybody who has concerns about fly tipping in their area should contact the Fly Tipping Enforcement Unit at Tameside Council on 0161 342 8355.
