Denton Robberies may be linked
Posted on Mon 12 Jul 2010
Police say two robberies comitted in the same week in Denton may be linked. Only a short distance seperates the Denton Post Office from Betfred, which was struck last Monday (05/07)
At about 4.30pm on Friday 9 July 2010, a man on a blue bicycle pulled up outside the Denton Post Office on Manchester Road and approached the cashier's desk.
He then produced some sort of metal weapon - about 12 inches long and cased in what is described as a pink bag - and threatened the cashier with violence if he was not given cash.
Fearing they would be hurt, the cashier put a significant amount of money into a bag and the offender got back onto his bicycle and rode off.
Police are now appealing to anyone who has information to come forward.
The offender is described as white, about 5ft 7in tall, of a stocky build, 30-40-years-old. He was wearing a beige coloured Parka coat with a fur hood, beige trousers and had his face covered with red netting.
Officers at Tameside CID are also investigating whether this is linked to a robbery at the Betfred bookmakers on Stockport Road, Denton, at about 1.20pm on Monday 5 July 2010.
A thief brandishing what appeared to be a gun robbed the bookmakers and then cycled off along Stockport Road towards Haughton Green on a blue mountain bike.
In both robberies, the descriptions of the offender are very similar and the use of a blue mountain bike in both, and the close proximity of Betfred to the post office, means police are looking at the possibility the two incidents are linked.
Detective Constable Martin Gregory, of Tameside CID, said: The robbery at the post office took place in broad daylight, and I want to focus our appeal on any witnesses who saw this man either pull up or leave the post office on the bicycle.
He was wearing a red netting to cover his face so there may be people who saw this man. Please, if you did see him or have any information then come forward because it could be crucial to our investigation.
We really want to catch this man and give the cashier whom he threatened the peace of mind of knowing he is locked up behind bars.
Greater Manchester Police is determined to stop robbers in their tracks and the Force has made it an absolute priority to catch these sorts of criminals. We have achieved some excellent convictions and with the public's help we can identify this man and lock him up.
Anyone with information is asked to call Tameside CID on 0161 856 9256 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
